New Orleans artist Sarah Dunn is leading an effort to paint a mural for Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation that will depict Louisiana’s unique culture, on a concrete pillar on the corner of Claiborne Avenue and Poydras Street steps away from the Superdome.

The mural will include LCEF’s slogan, “In Louisiana, Culture Means Business” and recognizable cultural elements. As an important industry contributing to Louisiana’s overall economy, the intent is for locals and visitors to realize the significance of our culture, and the work that LCEF does to support those who are responsible for keeping it alive.

Dunn was inspired by the Brees Dream Foundation Super Service Challenge to develop a service project that would bring awareness to this Foundation that has helped so many artists in our state, and also bring awareness to the importance of our cultural economy. Dunn, an LCEF grantee, joined forces with LCEF grantee Stacy LaFleur on the planning and execution of the service project.

“LCEF helped us grow our individual businesses and we are happy to give back,” said Dunn.
The mural will be painted on one of the largest I-10 pillars in N.O. and will have 11’ wide and 17’ tall paintings on each side designed by LaFleur and Dunn. With the help of community volunteers, between February 17th and February 20th, the designs will be painted on site. Helm Paint and other businesses have donated supplies for the mural. There is a Pay Pal account set up through the LCEF website, www.CulturalEconomy.org to accept individual donations toward the cause.

“We are approaching this for longevity, so we plan to prime the pillar and apply UV clear coat protection, which we believe is vital to the life of the images. The location is ideal because all of the locals and tourists who will be in town for the Super Bowl in February as well as those who visit the Superdome in years to come, will see our tribute to our local culture and to LCEF.” says Dunn.

LCEF secured permission for us to paint the column from Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
LCEF provides crucial services and resources for our cultural producers. The majority of them are low-income wage earners who are often overlooked both as a relevant sector of the economic community, and in relation to specific support and services.
