Memorial Day is observed every year on the final Monday of May.  The purpose of Memorial Day is to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed forces. The holiday was formerly known as Decoration Day, originating after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in that conflict.  By the 20th century, Memorial Day was extended to all Americans who died while in military service.   The holiday typically marks the beginning of summer vacation, while Labor Day marks the end.
