“The Beauty Queen Of Leenane” Opening Weekend At Center Of Performing Arts

"The Beauty Queen Of Leenane" Opening Weekend At Center Of Performing ArtsLocal theater director Julie Generes and Center Of Performing Arts (COPA) present the dark Irish comedy, “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” March 21, 22, 28, 29 and April 4.

This play by Martin McDonagh takes place in the small Irish town of Leenane in the 1980’s. Maureen, a middle aged spinster, takes care of her 70-year-old mother, Mag, and her manipulative ways. Mag’s interference in Maureen’s personal life sets the scene for a dark emotional roller coaster of a storyline. When asked why she chose to perform this play, local director Julie Generes said, “I am a huge Martin McDonagh fan. He manipulates an audiences emotions the way the characters in the play manipulate each other. It’s quite a ride. Plus, who doesn’t like a good Irish melodrama?”

“The Beauty Queen of Leenane” was the winner of four Tony Awards in 1998 (Best Leading Actress in a Play; Best Featured Actor in a Play; Best Featured Actress in a Play; Best Direction of a Play). This adaptation features local talent from Gina Pauratore, Melany Linder Graham, Eric Generes and Christian Core.

The show will take place at COPA, 201 N. Columbia St., in Downtown Covington. Tickets can be purchased online at www.centerofperformingarts.net or by calling (985)727-4638.
