This Week at the Covington Farmer’s Market

Covington Farmers Market LogoHowdy, friends, top of the Tuesday to you! We’re looking at a lot of happy little suns showing on the forecast for Wednesday so bring your happy little smiles and enjoy a great lunch with us. Chomper’s is planning to serve yummy ranch macaroni salad to go along with smokey pulled pork. Frankie’s vegetable soup is sure to hit the spot and I’ve already got her fried pecan pies on my list. Susan, with Columbia Street Natural Foods, will have more delicious wraps and sandwiches and roasted vegetables. For a south of the border treat, try Momma’s hot tamales. Aaaand – Earl is back with raw honey! Yea!  Yummee! And don’t forget your veggies and your eggs!

The Steve Anderson band will sing us into Saturday with catchy tunes cascading from the gazebo. And on Columbia Street, the Coffee Rani Food Truck will be pulled up to the curb with lots of their specialties. So make sure you’re here to enjoy the morning with us!

Well, last time I was out of town, I asked my trio of writers to stand in for me. I soooo enjoyed their writing and hope you did as well. This week, Ignatio has taken the reins to tell us what his family gets at the market.

“Our family uses stuff from the Farmers Market every week. I will tell you about some things we have used recently. Last week, we had livers for dinner from Mr James. They aren’t my favorite, but my little sisters like them if they can dip them in ketchup. I know they are very healthy, containing many vitamins. My Mama fries them in butter on the stove. I really liked Mr Sam’s radish chips. They had a wheat flavor at first, but then it turned to a spicy radish taste. I like those a lot. They taste so good that you wouldn’t think that they are healthy. But they are!

Caterina used some of Mr Sam’s sprouts in an omelet that she made today (egg, cheese, apple, and sprouts). On Saturday night my Mama made soup with sausage from Jubilee Farms and Arugula from Bartlett farms (of course she used her own broth, too). Every Saturday morning, she also gets Peach Water Kefir from the Kombucha Girl. My little sister Lucia got Orange juice from Amanda. Perpetua also got a strawberry popsicle from Amanda just as the market was closing. It’s her favorite thing from the market and she can eat it after she takes an afternoon nap. The three big kids had Swamp Pop from Simply Pure with Sunday Breakfast. Their juice is delicious, but also very healthy. We’re usually allowed to have special treats on Sundays, so the Swamp Pop was a good treat.

Lastly, every week we get Salsa from Spanish R Us. It’s my Papa’s favorite salsa, so we try to make sure to get it before she runs out. He prefers the hot kind. I’m sure we’ll get more delicious and healthy food next week!”

Thanks, Ignacio!

Just remember, friends, game day is really, really better with a stuffed artichoke (or two) to enjoy and/or Spanish R Us chips and salsa and refried beans! So put your list together ‘cause we have lots of goodness at the Covington Farmers’ Market. No matter what your favorites are, I’m sure you’ll find an added bonus at the market unless, of course, you sleep in :(.

Lots of love,

Charlene LeJeune
