This Week at the Farmer’s Market

It IS Tuesday, friends, and it will be all day long. But don’t despair!! It will be Wednesday before you know it and our Covington Farmers’ Market will be set up and raring to go! Stop by for a delightful lunch, soft breezes, and toe-tapping tunes. Pick up a pack of Lillie’s faaabulous tea cakes. I really enjoy them with my coffee or as a dessert or just because I was very, very good. If you haven’t tried Siria’s hot tamales, treat yourself — and add a side of that marvelous jello cream dessert that she makes. KANDY is back! yeah! But what shall I have? the shrimp cream cheese rolls? shredded cabbage salad? traditional egg rolls? No matter, it will be fun choosing. Frankie’s wonderful oven barbecued chicken is back on the menu with apple baked beans, cole slaw and cornbread! Jeremy & Natalie of St. August Brew are expanding their menu with fermented and pickled veggies and also nitro-brewed green tea. One particular version adds blueberries, hibiscus and lemonade to the tea for an deliciously refreshing beverage!

And then…it’s Saturday. Don’t even consider sleeping in or you will miss out on Daryl, Daryl, Daryl and Daryl with toe tapping tunes dancing out from the gazebo. Chef Fikret Kazan will roll out his Wood Burning Pizza Oven to the curb on Columbia Street with more of his amazing pizzas.

Keep up with what’s happening at the market through our Facebook page facebook.com/thecovingtonlafarmersmarket or on Instagram @covingtonlafarmersmarket. Lotsa great info there!

We are in the “in-betweens” for our produce vendors but you’ll still find the plenty of goodness out there. Natalie is back with hydroponic lettuce. Those lovely leaves are perfect in a salad but also as a wrap for chicken or shrimp or egg salad. Or just fill that leaf with Tessier’s spinach artichoke dip or Frankie’s spinach chestnut dip, or spread with any of Nur’s hummus (red pepper, chipotle, cilantro, or traditional).

Bardwells’ is sporting green tomatoes for your enjoyment and pleasure. You’ll find an interesting diversion in the form of dried Asian persimmons on Nick’s table. You’ll find cabbage, apples, turnips and green chilies on Mama Lea’s table — all deliciously fermented and healthy too!

Both Windfield Farms and Happy Flour bakeries have wonderful artisan breads available. AND Althee and Robin have the most incredible jams and jellies that accent any bread you choose. For a happy change of pace, Vincent’s skordalia makes a tasty garlic bread.

Take your time strolling around the grounds. Get in line for one of Ericka’s veggie pancakes (you’ll thanks yourself for that treat). You’ll also want to take home a jar of dipping sauce to go with that or a pint of ready-to-cook mix — just so you can have another one on Sunday. Remember to pick up a bottle of elderberry syrup. For some reason, allergies seem to be worse this past month and this stuff is fantastic!! Plenty of good times and good food to be had at Covington Farmers’ Market. We’d love it if you joined us.

Lots of love,

Charlene LeJeune
