The City of Covington has contracted Cox|McLain Environmental Consulting (CMEC) of Austin, Texas, to complete a historic resources survey for the City. CMEC will develop a comprehensive and up-to-date inventory of historic-age (built in 1970 or earlier) resources within the Division of St. John National Register of Historic Places District, as well as survey additional resources. CMEC will photo-document each historic-age property from the public right-of-way and record details about its architectural style, exterior materials, and alterations. CMEC historians will also conduct research on important associations for the buildings in the survey area (for example, homes or businesses of important people and locations of important events).
Historians from CMEC will be in Covington to perform the survey and conduct local research during the week of November 12, 2017. Please feel free to stop and speak with the historians and ask questions.
A kick-off meeting is planned for November 13, 2017 at 6:00 pm. The meeting will begin with a presentation, and CMEC staff will be available for questions afterwards. The meeting will be held in the City of Covington’s Council Chambers located at 222 Kirkland Street in Covington.
CMEC historians welcome input from the public regarding property histories and identification of significant buildings. Historic photographs, stories, and other information may be submitted to CMEC historians via the following email address: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Following the survey, CMEC will submit inventory forms for each property, and prepare a report with recommendations regarding potential updates to the NRHP district. The results of the survey will be presented to the public in the Spring of 2018.
