This Week at the Covington Farmer’s Market

How did the end of the year come so quickly, friends? Well no worries, if you’re not prepared, we’ve got delicious all ready for you. Chicken porridge from Kandy is becoming a staple in my house, a delightful, warming breakfast. After the indulgences of the past weeks, a light but filling shredded cabbage salad will be perfect. Warm yourself down to your toes with Frankie’s tomato basil soup or Kandy’s Vietnamese pho (especially if you’re feeling under the weather). Remember to pick up your Double K eggs — a must for egg nog!!, your veggies from Mr. Houston; I find a few chopped greens will enhance any soup or stew (even the store bought variety). Saturday will dawn and the days will begin their slow waltz into the New Year. Keith & Nealy Frentz of Lola’s restaurant will be in the demo tent to serve (and sell - yay!) samples of their black-eyed peas and cabbage — sooooo much easier than fixing it yourself. We are so blessed in southeast Louisiana that we can have fresh vegetables growing right through the winter. Even the storms can’t keep us down. And if there is a good game on TV, so much the better. A couple of bags of kettle corn ought to see ya through…at least till next week. We’ve hit the jackpot with game-time/movie-time snacks such as that amazing hummus that Vincent & Mauricio make and Melbatini to go with. Hiding over in the back corner of our market — Kettle Corn! Now if that’s not a perfect game-time/movie-time snack, I don’t know what is. Everyone’s favorite, salsa, is not going to be difficult to find. Spanish R Us has several (with varying heat levels) - tomato or avocado; they also have pico de gallo, refried beans and chips! Frankie’s cheese straws, spinach chestnut dip, Tessier’s black bean salsa or spinach artichoke dip, a pint of strawberries, Norma Jean’s spiced walnuts, walnut pate, PLUS there are goodies galore! Need I say more? Yes…better get two; sometimes you have to share! Blink and it will be January (not too hard or it will be February). Oh, 2017, we’ve weathered your trials and yet our tents spring up each week, rain or shine. We relished your joys as we would a great meal (or a fabulous cookie ;). Lively music flowing through the gazebo inspired more than one Astair to indulge in a little dancing. It’s a great place to meet old friends…make new ones. What a year we have had!
