With Mardi Gras season behind us, the Covington Celtic Club is busy at work planning and preparing for Covington’s nest big party… St. Patrick’s Day! This year’s St. Patrick’s Parade and Celebration takes place on Saturday, March 16th beginning at 12 pm at the Columbia Street Tap Room, winding throughout downtown Covington and concluding with a block party in front of Jewel’s Cigar & Briar and Toad Hollow on the corner of Rutland and New Hampshire Streets.
In addition to the traditional parade offerings of 100+ members passing out paper flowers and other Irish throws, bagpipers, St. Paul’s Marching Wolves, several dance groups and more… Covington Celtic Club is very excited to announce the 2019 Grand Marshal, Zack Strief! The New Orleans Saints selected Strief in the 7th round of The 2016 NFL Draft, kicking off a 12 year career in New Orleans. Strief spent his entire career in the Crescent City protecting Drew Brees, playing on the Super Bowl Championship Team in 2010. Beginning a career off of the field, Strief, alongside a group of partners, started Port Orleans Brewing Co. in May of 2017. He officially retired from football in March of 2018, but after four months away from the gridiron, he returned: this time as a broadcaster. In July of 2018, Strief officially accepted the position of Voice of the Saints with WWL radio.
Nick Ludwig, parade chairman, explained, “A partnership with Zach and Port Orleans Brewing for Covington’s St. Patrick’s parade made for a perfect team. Zach is a great community ambassador and Covington resident, and we are thrilled to have him as our Grand Marshal.”
Some restaurants and places of business like The English Tea Room and Eatery on Rutland St. are having their own watch parties during and after the parade, so the CCC encourages parade-goers to spread out along the whole route to get the best view and special throws!
The block party at the parade end will have lots of free, family-friendly fun to keep the celebration going. Immediately following the parade, The Kilts of Many Colors Bagpipers will play, followed by a performance by the McElroy Academy of Irish Dance – giving the event a traditional touch – and then closing out the day, Next Gen V Band will play until the block party end.
The event is free, food and drinks will be available for purchase. Sweet Daddy’s BBQ and Vasquez will be selling food, and Toad Hollow will have the Budweiser Tap Truck out with plenty of Irish and local beer, including of course, Strief’s Port Orleans Brewing Co.
So, embrace your Irish heritage (even if you are just pretending for the day), wear your green and Erin Go Bragh! The Covington Celtic Club once again invites everyone on the Northshore and beyond to revel in our historic streets, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and see how our restaurants, local businesses and shops throw a celebration to remember!
After Party with Zach Strief and Port Orleans Brewing Co. at Wharton’s Green Room after the parade!
