Saturday will stroll in at its usual time and with New Year’s resolutions already a thing of the past, stop by one of our wonderful bakers for something delightful while you shop. You’ll find cookies, muffins (or just the tops), pies, cobblers, brownies, praline, and cheesecake. Mr. Funny Money will be sharing melodies from the gazebo, Ed will be serving coffee in the pavilion and all will be right with the world.
This is probably a good time to remind you to shop locally especially since the veggies are absolutely gorgeous this year — cabbage, chard, mustard, collards, turnips, kale, green onions, cauliflower — all to tempt you into a healthier way of eating. Tomato Ann is back and she has lots of beautiful tomatoes. I especially like the cherry tomato medley – chocolate, orange and red. She even has white, purple and black eggplant! And, of course, there are oranges, grapefruit, kumquats, and strawberries — in the raw or “jammed” up!
If you are holding true to a healthier new year resolution, then a visit to Sam’s Sprouts should be on your list. He can make you a fabulous juice with his sprouts, shoots, and microgreens. Or just take some home for your sandwiches or salads. A visit to Succotash Ferments is in order as well. Nancy has a wonderful selection of raw krauts as well as kombucha and kefir. Don’t forget your Naturally Well elderberry syrup to get you through the season (or even next season).
Kimberly has been kicking up her game in the vegan delights category. Her Vegan Crabcakes have a creamy texture and terrific flavor, all served on a homemade bun. I also noticed Jackfruit on the menu and was told that it is an Indian fruit that is very similar to pulled pork. Who knew vegan could be so good?
Did you remember your eggs? How about milk? Yogurt? Raw honey? Shrimp? Bread? Mushrooms? I just roasted the tenderest pork loin last night for dinner. It received a thumbs up from even the grandkids! You’ll find that and more at Jubilee Farms.
A trip to your Covington Farmers’ Market this week is always an adventure! Come join us for a smorgasbord of delights. See you there!
Lots of love, Charlene LeJeune, Abundant Life Kitchen
