As usual, our 2020 celebration begins with our traditional Poster and Essay Contest. We invite the citizens of St. Tammany Parish to join us by participating in the Greater Covington Area’s Essay and Poster Contest that is sponsored by the Covington NAACP.

First and second place winners will be chosen in four categories: grades K-3, 4-7, 8-12 and adults. Winners will receive a prize if in attendance at the celebration. First place winners will be given the opportunity to read their essays or display their posters during the holiday celebration at Fuhrmann Auditorium in the Greater Covington Center on January 20, 2020.

Entries must be delivered to the Covington Planning and Zoning Department at the Greater Covington Center by noon, Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Winners will be notified on Saturday, January 18, 2020. For more information or clarification, contact Ashley Russell at (985) 201-9188.

Throughout his life, Dr. King was focused on serving mankind. In honor of his 91st birthday, this time is a perfect opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy by doing random acts of kindness. This can empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems that moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.

It all starts with one act – one smile, one coffee for a stranger, one favor for a friend. It’s an opportunity for a community to leave the world better than they found it and inspire others to do the same.
