Hey! Happy Fracking New Year!!!

Published by:

Thank-you purple

by Timothy Achan Gates

Covington Weekly began with the intention of promoting all that Historic Downtown Covington has to offer, and we would like to thank our advertisers who have supported our vision. The English Tea Room was CW’s very first advertiser, and we watched their business grow through the years, as CW grew. Our Place Studio has been with us for a couple of years, Liz Bragdon providing insightful articles with exciting and new approaches to movement exercise and yogic disciplines. History Antiques & Interiors celebrates their third year downtown, filled with eclectic treasures.

Justin Brien offers a very disciplined and rational approach to rehabilitative exercise and general movement through Natural Movement Solutions, located in the Village Walk area. Goodbee Plumbing recently moved to downtown Covington, a testament to the business they do here locally. Then there’s Columbia Street Rock N Blues Cafe, with salads, solid pub fare and nightlife, and The Green Room, offering drink specials and late night food on the weekends courtesy of Phil at Baba Ganoush.  Zita’s joined this past year, and we wish Jack and Zita well with their brand new location in Mandeville and continued success at their location in Covington.

Without Robert Sturcken at the Center Of Performing Arts, I probably wouldn’t have been able to play half of the gigs I’ve played in the last couple of years. Jewel’s Cigar and Briar is a great place to sit, relax and catch up, and it’s sometimes difficult to start the day without stopping in to St. John’s Coffeehouse. The list would certainly not be complete without Rosemary’s Closet, who has supplied a good portion of Chelsea’s wardrobe, as well as mine, and Brooks’ Bike Shop, who keeps our bikes in order. Jerry Braswell was helpful in CW’s growth, and we wish a good, full recovery to him. Thanks to the Covington Business Association for promoting downtown Covington, and maybe 2016 will be the year that the CBA can step up and act as an even greater liaison between the City and businesses.

“The Trip to Bountiful” Opening Night Friday at Playmakers Theater

Published by:

Trip to Bountiful - Playmakers TheaterThis is the poignant story of Mrs. Watts, an aging widow living with her son and daughter-in-law in a three-room flat in Houston, Texas. Fearing that her presence may be an imposition on others, and chafing under the watchful eye of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Watts imagines that if she can get away and return to her old home in the town of Bountiful, she is sure to regain her strength, dignity and peace of mind. So she attempts to run away, and when she reaches a bus station on the last part of her short journey, she falls into the hands of a sheriff whom her son and daughter-in-law have put on her trail. The sheriff, a kindly fellow, allows her to complete the final stage of her journey, so she proceeds to Bountiful and makes a lonely pilgrimage to the scene of her old home. Only too soon she learns that the friends of her youth have all died or scattered, and her home is no longer the spacious mansion of her memories but a crumbling wreck. But she has the supreme satisfaction of plunging her hands into the strength-giving earth, and this leaves her with a sense of that strength and dignity that will give her the courage to survive. When her son and daughter-in-law appear on the scene to take her back to Houston, she consents to return quietly, secure in the knowledge that the remainder of her existence will be enriched as a result of her last contact with Bountiful.

This performance, directed by Derek Thrush, stars Covington local, owner of Rosemary’s Closet Elizabeth Pfeffer Williams as the central role of Mrs. Carrie Watts, with Cary Martin as her son Ludie, and Deborah Marcelle as his wife Jessie Mae. Other cast members include Blaze D’Amico, Mack Maginnis, Allen Bryant, Virginia Patecek and Frankie Castello.

Opening night is Friday September 5th with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 2 pm until September 21st (no show on the 7th). For more information or to make your reservations online visit www.playmakersinc.com
