Wed Farmers Market sign

Happy, happy Tuesday! This time last year our Tuesday was frozen over with the threat of snow on Wednesday and the promise of a balmy 70°on the Saturday. Gotta love the weather in southeast Louisiana in the winter.  But our skies tomorrow will be crisp and clean without a cloud in the whole big blue expanse. OK, there may be a cloud or two but a few little marshmellow-y delights up there will only add to the enjoyment. And enjoyment it will be when you bite into a yummy muffaletta or crispy crunchy shrimp & cream cheese roll. You may prefer a raw salad and a nice bowl of soup or a pulled pork sandwich with corn bread pudding. Whatever you do, save room for one of Frankie’s pies. She’s making chocolate mint cream and lemon ice box mini pies among other things. Keep in mind that Nanette’s almond date bars are perfect for breakfast. I’m not sure how you’ll decide. I just buy several so I’ll have some to last me till Saturday. Take home a carton of red ripe strawberries ‘cause you know you’ll want some later.

The rest of the week will drift lazily by because Saturday is never in a hurry to get here unless, of course, you’re scheduled to work. But we hope you not ‘cause then you’d miss the vibrant tunes of Gina Forsyth wafting from the gazebo and the smoky goodness of Chomper’s BBQ. Jeff is rolling out the smoker and you don’t want to miss that!

Farmhouse Dairy at the Covington Farmer's Market

Tiffany and Andy, Farmhouse Dairy, have been very busy with all the new kids being born. But they will be there on Saturday with fresh goat milk and goat cheese which is a good thing cause you’ll need it for the “Big Game”. Try this, fill some of these fluffy little tat soi leaves with a spoon of creamy goat cheese and top with a dollop of Robin’s or Althee’s pepper jelly. It doesn’t matter what flavor; the problem will be choosing only one. Of course, you can also fill them with a spoonful of Nur’s tabouli or Hot Tamale Mama’s spinach artichoke dip for a definite change of pace.

What do you do with the bottoms of the tat soi leaves that you stuffed with cheese? They also fill very nicely with cheese and pepper jelly or use them as dippers. Dipping carrots abound as well as cauliflower and broccoli. Spanish R Us has several different salsa variations and refried beans. Soriedad even makes the chips to go with. Add a few of Dee’s pickled veggies and Lena’s toasted bread rounds to your tray and you are done!

Althee's Jellies and Jams

Althee’s Jellies and Jams

Make your own meatballs with ground beef, lamb, pork (Farmbouse Dairy, Jubilee Farms, Mt. Herman Pork). In a crockpot, mix together with a jar (more or less depending on how many meatballs you have) of Chomper’s Original BBQ Sauce and a jar of Althee’s Blackberry jelly and add your cooked meatballs. For spicier fare, use one of Robin’s pepper jellies. Italian or green onion sausage, baked in the oven and sliced, also works well.

We have lots of goodies to fill your Game Day trays and your Every Day eating dishes – loads of delicious veggies, ripe strawberries, fresh milk, artisan breads, creamed honey, plump shrimp, luscious brownies, muffins, mini pies, nut brittle, and cookies. Lolly Marie has beautiful chocolates that no one can resist. A large overstuffed artichoke from Angel will satisfy lots of guests (or just one). We’ll have music and laughter in abundance. Don’t even think about sleeping in!

Lots of love,
