basketballribboncuttingChevron, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Louisiana, St. Tammany Parish Government, the City of Covington and State Representative John Schroder are teaming up to support the 3rd Annual Hoops for Kids 3-On-3 Basketball Tournament. The event will be held in Covington, LA and kick off with a ribbon cutting on Friday, September 4th, with the main tournament set for Saturday, September 5th. Boys and girls in junior high and high school are invited to participate.

Last year, over 30 teams and 200 kids took part in the competition. Proceeds supported the installation of covers over the basketball courts at Rev. Peter S. Atkins Park and refurbishment of the area. A day prior to this year’s tournament, a ribbon cutting will be held to officially open the courts.

Proceeds from this year’s event will support the Boys & Girls Club in Covington. Their mission is to enable young people, especially those most in need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Club programs promote academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.

“We are proud to partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Louisiana and Boys & Girls Clubs across the Gulf Coast,” said Chevron Gulf of Mexico Vice President Mike Illanne. “I’ve seen first-hand how this organization’s tireless efforts benefit local children. The young men and women they support then go on to contribute to a number of charitable causes themselves. Together the Clubs and these inspirational kids are making a positive impact on the community.”

“By sponsoring a number of events like this basketball tournament, Chevron has had a truly transformational influence on our Clubs,” said Keila Stovall, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Louisiana. “Their outstanding financial support, employee volunteerism and overall commitment to the young people served by our organization are a great example for corporations and citizens alike, and we are so incredibly thankful.”

State Representative John Schroder added, “Now in its third year, this Hoops for Kids tournament is a slam dunk for St. Tammany Parish and I’m pleased to be a part of it. The competition itself and the renovations to the Rev. Peter S. Atkins Park basketball courts encourage children to focus on fitness, while this year’s support of the Boys & Girls Club in Covington will provide for their future success. A fun day of basketball brings real long-term benefits for the youth of our area.”
