CPD Receives ESGR Pro Patria Award

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Pro Patria Award is the highest level award bestowed by an ESGR State Committee, awarded to employers for demonstrating the greatest support to Guard and Reserve employees through their leadership and practices. This includes adopting personnel policies that make it easier for employees to participate in the National Guard and Reserve. The Pro Patria Award is presented annually by each ESGR State Committee to one small, one large, and one public sector employer in their state or territory.

Established in 1972, ESGR is the lead Defense Department program promoting cooperation and understanding between civilian employers and their National Guard and Reserve employees. ESGR develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the Reserve Components through outreach, recognition and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws and resolves employer conflicts between service members and their employers.

“The Covington Police Dept. and the City of Covington received the ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard Reserve) Pro Patria Award. This is the highest award given in the State and the Police Dept was the only public agency in the State to receive the award. We won the award as the result of a submittal made by Sgt. Lance Benjamin. Because of his submission, the Police Department has qualified for the National Freedom Award which will be awarded in Washington DC later this year.
During the award presentation this morning we were able to video conference Sgt. Benjamin in from Afghanistan. We are so proud of Sgt Benjamin and the sacrifices he and his family have made for our country. It was great to see his smiling face today and to know he is doing well.”  – Chief Tim Lentz
