St. Tammany Art Association presents the “Northshore Invitational”, a new exhibition featuring the work of 21 artists. Don Marshall, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, brings together some of Louisiana’s most notable artists in his return to the St. Tammany Art Association (STAA) as he curates the “Northshore Invitational”, a special Fall for Art exhibition.
This exhibition will consist of Francie Rich’s surreal and eccentric work alongside the soothing calmness of Emery Clark’s photo-realistic waves that immerse and soothe the viewer, which will create an interesting juxtaposition within the gallery. The exhibition includes abstract works by Hasmig Vartanian, Ed Whiteman, Bernard Mattox, and Douglas Brewster. Three-dimensional works will also be included in the show. William Binnings and Mark Grote will each be showing stand-alone sculptures and Marshall has selected several pieces of pottery made by the celebrated ceramicist, John Hodge.
Also crossing international boundaries are Basque colorist José María Cundin, and sculptor George Dunbar, who uses 22 karat gold leaf to cover red and black clay, and Rolland Golden, incorporating subtle surrealism in his watercolors of the Mississippi River.
The Louisiana environment, landscapes, and cityscapes have affected many of these artists. These effects are evident not only in their artwork but also drives inspiration and a mindset to create. This influence is evident in the colorful imagery of Robert Warrens, Bunny Matthews’s surrealistic drawings of inhabitants of New Orleans, Shirley Rabé Masinter’s hyperrealism paintings of New Orleans, and the seemingly naive style of Leslie Staub’s portraits of Southern cultural icons and creatures.
The exhibit will be on display through November 30, 2019, in our main Miriam Barranger Gallery. A gallery discussion with Don Marshall that will be moderated by Linda Dautreuil will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm at the STAA Art House.
