Dawn Koetting began painting in pastel 14 years ago. A recently retired veterinarian, she has enjoyed this time to continue pursuing her passion in pastel, taking a wide variety of workshops from nationally acclaimed artists. Her works have been exhibited at the National Arts Club in NYC and in the IAPS ( International Association of Pastel Societies ) biennial convention show, as well as at the Butler Museum of American Art in Youngstown, OH and the Lulu and Paul Hilliard Museum of Art in Lafayette, LA. She holds signature membership in the Degas Pastel Society and the Pastel Society of America.

“My art centers around bringing into view the simple beauty that surrounds us. Hectic, hurried lifestyles have people rushing past scenes and objects that have a certain beauty if one just takes the time to look. I enjoy painting the landscape en plein air ( on location) and am especially drawn to the patterns and colors of the agrarian landscape, the majestic live oaks, and the waterways meandering across our area. The repeating oval patterns of rusty tire rims and water lily leaves also seem to hold a special attraction and are seen in multiple works. Pastel is my main medium due to its direct application of almost pure pigment. My technique combines drawing and painting, layer upon layer, allowing the texture of the surface and that of the strokes of pigment to show through. I utilize different techniques of underpainting depending on subject and circumstance.”
