Per St. Tammany Parish Mosquito Abatement District (STPMAD), a sample from a mosquito trap collected on June 15 with 126 mosquitoes of multiple species tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV)-infected mosquitoes at the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at the LSU Veterinary Medicine School. This trap was located in the vicinity of Covington.
The good news is that this is a late start for the WNV season as it is usually well underway in May. Generally, the later they start the lower the risk to people.
Starting the night of June 28th (weather permitting), STPMAD will be sending trucks to abate flying adult mosquitoes. Beginning June 29th, night truck crews will be conducting area-wide larviciding activities to abate larval mosquitoes that are produced in containers in backyard environments.
