The Fox Squirrel can grow to 28″ from head to tail. In the South, it is generally grayish or grizzled with a dark head, white nose and ears. Heavy-bodied with a squarish face, the Fox Squirrel can be found in oak groves and close to longleaf pines in open forest stands. They may also be found on the borders of cypress swamps, as well as urban areas. The Fox Squirrel has two types of shelters: leaf nests and tree dens. They often use natural tree cavities or holes created by birds. Favorite foods include tree buds, insects, tubers, bulbs, roots, bird eggs, and the seeds of pines and spring fruiting trees. They are vocal with an assortment of “chucking” and “clucking” sounds.
