The earliest known turtles date from 215 million years ago, making turtles one of the oldest reptile groups. Like other reptiles, turtles are ectotherms, meaning their internal temperature varies according to the ambient environment. Turtles breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water.
The box turtle enjoys open woodlands, wood edges, fields, stream banks and moist areas. These turtles are gentle and make good pets. Young turtles eat snails, earthworms and insect larvae; adults eat berries, fungi and fruit. In captivity, turtles will eat fresh meat, canned dog food, fruits and greens.
