The swallowtail butterfly is common in various parts of North America, mainly found in the south and east in the United States. With a wingspan of 4-6 inches, it is the largest butterfly in North America. The body and wings are dark brown to black with yellow bands. Each wing tail has a yellow “eye” which extends down. The abdomen has bands of yellow and brown. In Louisiana, they may be seen as late as October. Giant Swallowtails are difficult to capture, as they fly high and fast.
