This Week at the Covington Farmers Market by Charlene LeJeune

Happy Tuesday, friends! Well, I’m planning for a gorgeous day tomorrow. Come and enjoy a leisurely lunch while you listen to our faithful musicians. Watch your time, though, it slips away all too quickly on days like this. Now your problem is trying to decide what to have for lunch. Nanette has a truly incredible Mediterranean salad complete with pita bread. Chomper’s BBQ will have Mac N Cheese and broccoli salad to go with their pulled pork while Rebecca offers authentic Honduran tamales and salsa and Kandi’s pan seared salmon salad will be calling your name. What the heck! Bring some home for supper. It’s easier than cooking.

So, I’ve been out of the loop for two whole weeks and definitely experiencing withdrawal pains! You may think, “What can possibly have changed in only two weeks?” A LOT! Does Hot Tamale Mama or Veggie Meals 2 Go have new dishes? Will Angel be there with her wonderful artichokes? What kind of new coconut chips will Sam have? Did Robin dream up a new pepper jelly flavor? What new blossoms will Nancy have for my table? Will Tabasco remember me? See what I mean?

What I do know is that Andrew McLean and James Killeen will be crooning their tunes from the gazebo and there will be pizza! That’s right; Isabella’s Pizzaria will drive their special pizza oven to the market to ensure that your pizza treat is piping hot and deeeelish.

I do know that everywhere you look at our market is evidence of Spring’s promise of abundance from leafy greens to sweet orange carrots and rich red strawberries. I do know that goat milk is flowing from the nannies at Farmhouse Dairy and coffee milk now comes from Mauthe’s cows. Even Blood River bees’ “milk” is golden and sweet. (No, I’ve never tried to milk a bee, but then I’ve never milked a goat or a cow before.)

I also know that you don’t want to miss the sweet treats that abound from the tables of Windfield Farms, Teresa’s Italian Cookies, Betty Rue’s Gluten Free, 7Grain, or Bear Creek Road. And nowhere else will you get the whole grain goodness of 7Grain breads, unique artisan breads from Windfield Farms, or sourdough gluten-free breads from Betty Rue. Nowhere else will you find such things as kombucha, cultured veggies, and elderberry syrup. Who else can boast the likes of Meaux Blueberry Mustard, Rosalie’s lovely teas, and Korean Buchimgae (those delicious pancakes that I see floating through the market)? It’s all right here at the Covington Farmers’ Market. Where will you be?

Lots of love,
Charlene LeJeune
