This Week at the Farmers’ Market by Charlene LeJeune

Covington Farmers’ Market weekly newsletter by Charlene LeJeune:

Tis the season, friends, to be jolly, to be thankful, to enjoy the blessings of the market! And blessings there will be! Jerome is preparing more of his delightful sweet potato and carrot soup and the creamiest quiches as well. Tis also the season for pho! pho! pho! So take your jolly ole self over to Kandy’s table where you can get the best pho ever made. It will warm you down to your toes…right through your holiday socks! Abeer has hummus and tzatziki and tabouli back on the menu and Mujadara, a classic Arabic dish featuring lentils and rice, herbs, topped with caramelized onions. It’s a delicious vegetarian main dish!

Joy is planning on a delightful chicken pasta dish sure to make you glad you made it to the market. You must be on the NICE list, ‘cause she is also making her amazing stuffed artichoke. You must have been extra special nice since Corey’s smoker has been doing double duty. Smoked ham and Gouda plus smoked chicken leg quarters are both on the menu!

More than just a little nice, Johnny has his fabulous beet and black bean burger, lovingly grilled, and topped with avocado slices, sprouts, and Johny’s secret sauce. What a glorious Wednesday it is going to be!

Make sure you have enough Double K eggs and Jerry’s honey or blueberry jam for your biscuits or for last minute Christmas gifting?

Lots of love,
Charlene LeJeune

Happy, happy Tuesday, friends! It hardly feels like December and that makes Wednesday a perfect day to sit out at the market, enjoy a lovely day of music and food and relaxation. After all, it’s just a little over a week until Christmas and a delightful lunch will do you good.

Linnzi Zaorski

Linnzi Zaorski

Keep in mind this is the last Saturday before Christmas so you’ll want to stock up on things you’ll need for your holiday celebration! What a great day we’ll have on Saturday with Linnzi Zaorski and her enchanting voice singing us a gift from the gazebo. So grab a steamy, delicious cup of java and enjoy the morning with us. Keith and Nealy Frentz will be there in the Lola Deux food truck with all kinds of deliciousness. I love watching trays of Parmesan Fries travel past on their way to putting a smile on someone’s face. If you’re having trouble finding a gift for the chef in your life, you’re in luck. Jeff Young, The Catholic Foodie, will be at the market this Saturday with his newly released cookbook Around the Table with the Catholic Foodie: Middle Eastern Cuisine. Enjoy fascinating stories of food and faith in the Holy Land as author Jeff Young shows you how to prepare the savory cuisine of that region.

As I mentioned before, Christmas will soon be upon us and this is your last Saturday to get your Farmers’ Market gifts and treats. Look no further for the perfect gift for Uncle What’s-His-Name or Aunt I-Have-Everything-I-Could-Ever-Want. We have a selection of goodies that will make a wonderful gift. (Yeah, I knew you were wondering when I’d get around to them.) Teresa’s Italian has a mixed bag of cookies that include such favorites as biscotti, fig cookies, anise cookies, luscious praline cookies, those crunchy lemon cookies and more – all there in one convenient bag! Or you can pick a bag of your favorites.

Windfield Farm Bakery

Windfield Farm Bakery

Just turn around and you are right there by Windfield Farms and such decadent munchies as Pumpkin Ooey Gooeys, Lemon Bars, Raspberry Crumble and Chocolaty Brownies. I enjoyed a pumpkin ooey gooey just this week, slighty warmed in the oven and topped with a light dollop of Mauthe’s yogurt. What a treat! Make a box of Suzie’s muffins – Morning Glory, Chocolate, and/or Blueberry. Let your giftee know that each muffin can be frozen so you can prolong the enjoyment. Two more steps and you are treated to truffles and candied apples and soft caramels from Lolly Marie. If you haven’t already tried her white chocolate ginger truffles, do yourself a favor and don’t wait any longer.

Create a box of gluten-free cookies and muffins from Betty Rue with peanut butter chocolate chip, gingerbread, chocolate crinkle, and oatmeal raisin. She even has several grain-free choices such as her chocolaty Santa cookies with little flecks of peppermint stick dancing throughout or the newest flavor, chocolate chip. The flour that Crystal uses in her cookies is a unique blend of ancient grains not traditionally found in your typical boxed gluten free cookies so a bag of cookie mix is especially nice for those who like to bake their own cookies!

Over at Bear Creek Road, the goodness is flowing from every corner with delicious gingerbread pie with apple berry filling or chocolate bourbon pecan pie. Jennifer has a table full of sweetness with caramel cookies, cranberry squares (really good), decadent fudge brownies and more. Nanette has some amazing raw cookies like my favorite almond date bars (great by itself or sprinkled over yogurt) or chocolate coconut balls! Norma Jean bakes up some tasty loaf breads – a perfect size for two people.

There’s something great on every table – even those no goodies. We’re just jam-packed with great gift ideas…great food…great music…great people – yourself included! Join us; it wouldn’t be the same without you!

Hi, friends and happy Tuesday! Is it Tuesday? The days and weeks have flown by so fast, it’s hard to remember. And there aren’t too many shopping days left and sometimes just thinking of all the holiday activities is exhausting.

But, Wednesday is on the horizon, and even though sleigh bells are jingling (somewhere in the world), you need to take some time to treat yourself to a lovely lunch at the Market. Indulge in a delicious hot Mushroom Barley soup, muffaletta, pulled pork, or warm rich chicken porridge. Finish your meal with a mini pecan pie or apple tart and take some strawberries home and some shelled pecans for your holiday baking.

Toad HollowRise and shine early on Saturday to come and enjoy the music of Reed Alleman from the gazebo. Then get set for a treat from the chefs of Toad Hollow Café in Covington. Chefs Todd and Kelly Kiviko will sample specialties from their organic and GMO-free menu.

Keep colds and flu at bay with Kombucha Girls Master Tonic. Remember that their bitters make a fantastic gift – your choice of flavors in a beautiful hand-stamped bag. Brighten up the season with a soothing tea from Rosalie Apothecary. She has some wonderful blends including a gypsy cold blend and a  mulling spice blend – another wonderful gift. Samantha’s elderberry Faust Farmssyrup is great to have on hand during this season and great to give as a gift. The scent of fresh brewed coffee is sooooo inviting (like popcorn popping) and Kevin always has an amazing gourmet roast for us. What an awesome gift!

Get your orders in early! Bruce Lambert will have whole geese for sale, as well as quarters (bone in) and ground goose meat and he is taking orders for Christmas. Enten Farms suggests duck for your holiday meal. Jeff (Chomper’s BBQ) is taking orders for smoked Christmas turkeys (in case goose or duck is not your thing). Think how special it would be to have fresh herbs on the table fragrantly waiting to be snipped and added to your dishes! Alton and Sandra will make a special basket of herbs or your choosing. You’ll want to make sure you have one (or more) of Mauthe’s sinfully delicious cheesecakes to enjoy (oh alright, for guests too).

Sweet Home Sweet Earth balmsDelight family and friends with the perfect gift: lovely goat’s milk soaps from Farmhouse Dairy and/or jar of their Mexican Cajeta sauce; Bear Creek Road’s mini-jars of pear butter and brandied plum butter; Aunt Bee’s black n gold soap for your Saints fan; a selection of Robin’s Rocking Cajun Pepper Jellies such as cranberry pecan and apple bacon; a gift certificate from Jasmine for all natural skin care; a selection of Althee’s jellies such as kumquat marmalade, mayhaw jelly and blackberry jelly; a jar of Sweet Home, Sweet Earth’s Miracle Balm;  or a jar or two of Dee’s colorful pickled vegetables like her ‘Mary Mix’ of zesty dilled veggies. A bag of Norma Jean’s Sweet N Spicy Walnuts or a small box of Lolly Marie’s white chocolate ginger truffles make welcome stocking stuffers. Remember something for your four-legged friends from Tiger Bait raw pet food.

The Covington Farmers’ Market is a remarkable place to be on any morning. C’mon…. it’s lovely weather to spend a market day together with you!
