Covington Art Market This Saturday

St. Tammany Art Association, in partnership with the City of Covington, presents the Covington Art Market, a juried market of visual arts and crafts held the first Saturday of the month at the Trailhead in Covington. The event features a variety of work from local and regional artists, including jewelry, photography, paintings, fiber art, woodworking, pottery and more.

Peg Usner Solo Exhibition at City Hall

The City of Covington’s Gallery at City Hall will open the solo exhibition of Peg Usner with a reception. Mayor Mike Cooper invites the public to attend on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, from 5:00-7:00pm.
Peg Usner focuses on plein air painting, creating art in the natural landscape.  She began painting on her own at 11 years old, and received her first formal training under Raymond Scully in New Orleans.  Peg received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Louisiana Tech, and her Master of Arts in History at UNO.  As a professor of Interior Design, she led the program and taught for 23 years at Delgado College.

From 2015 through 2018, Peg served as Longue Vue House and Gardens’ first Artist in Residence.. In September 2018, Longue Vue hosted her solo show entitled “Impressions: NOLA, Northshore and Beyond.”  The St. Tammany Art Association has been displaying Peg’s works since 1997, and in September of 2017 featured her in a solo show entitled “The Intimacy of Plein Air Painting.” In January of 2017, the Atrium Gallery at Christwood in Covington, Louisiana, also hosted a solo exhibition of her work.  LPB featured Peg’s story in the 2017 Season 5, Episode 502 edition of “Art Rocks.”  Peg participates annually in the Abita Springs “En Plein Air” and New Iberia “Shadows on the Teche” plein air events.  She participates in art festivals, including Three Rivers, in Covington.  Also, Peg illustrated David Campbell’s poetry book “Nature All Around Us” in 2017.  The July/August 2018 issue of InsideNorthside featured her as cover artist. 
She continues to paint the beauty of Louisiana, but also in the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina on frequent visits.  However, wherever Peg is with her paints, nature provides subjects for her art.

StoryWalk With the Author and Artist

StoryWalk at the Northlake Nature Center with David Lee Campbell and Peg Usner, Thursday, April 26, 2018, from 5:30 til 7:30 p.m.  StoryWalk is a fun, educational activity that lets you enjoy reading books or poems placed along a popular walking route in your community.  StoryWalk helps build interest in reading while encouraging healthy activity for both adults and children.  Originally designed to encourage children to read more, the Northlake Nature Center in collaboration with the St. Tammany Parish Library have taken this activity to a new level to introduce adults to reading outdoors while engaging in a healthy activity.
Meet author David Lee Campbell and artist Peg Usner, who present a book of art and poetry: “Nature All Around Us – Fifty Years of Life with Creatures and Native Plants in Louisiana.   There will also be a reading at the St. Tammany Parish Library – Covington location on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Call the Library for more information: 985-893-6280 ext. 2010

The 7th Covington Business Resource Workshop takes place this Thursday, September 21 at the Bogue Falaya Hall in the City Hall Building. The workshop focuses on Social Media in the Workplace. Be A Buddy, Not A Bully Marlise Eschete, Community Outreach Coordinator for The Parenting Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, will discuss the topic of bullying. Parents and children are invited to come learn about the different types of bullying, how to prevent it and what to do if you’re experiencing it. This discussion takes place Thursday, September 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Covington Branch of the St. Tammany Parish Library.

Troubadours Songwriter Night takes place on Thursday, September 21 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Covington Brewhouse. Hosted by Tommy Ike Hailey of the Northshore Songwriters Circle, this event features songwriter rounds with an open mic at the end. Held every third Thursday of the month at the Covington Brewhouse, this month features the following regional artists: John West, Matthew Chauvin, Jim Nelson, Buzz Jackson, Tony Cobb and Timothy Achan Gates.

Covington Brewhouse will be doing a special cask tapping this Thursday night at The Tasting Room to celebrate Louisiana Craft Beer Week and the Covington Brewhouse team has a very special announcement to make at this event. Special entertainment will be provided by the Covington Troubadours Songwriter group. Celebrate Louisiana Craft Beer Week in Covington Brewhouse style.

The Covington Farmer’s Market takes place every week on Wednesdays at the Covington Trailhead and Saturdays at the Covington Police Department. Wednesday market is from 10 a.m. Until 2 p.m. And features prepared foods for lunchtime; Saturday market is from 8 a.m. Until 12 noon and features fresh produce, prepared foods, plants, live music and a food demo. This Saturday, enjoy the music of Crispin Schroeder with a food demo by Bear Creek Road.

Join Peg Usner, Artist at St. Tammany Art Association as she presents a talk and walk through her exhibition, “The Intimacy of Plein Air Painting.” Peg will explain the meaning behind the artwork titles, give brief narration of her creative process and describe the challenges of each piece. Doors open at 5 p.m., talk begins at 5:30. Free admission. STAA is located 320 N. Columbia St.

DOTD Open House Public Meeting on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the Covington City Council Chambers, located at 222 East Kirkland Street, 4 – 6 p.m. (LADOTD) is conducting an open house public meeting for the proposed US 190B and Jefferson Ave. Roundabout project. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information about the project and to obtain input from interested parties with a multi-media presentation.

Meet the Artist Peg Usner

A native of Gentilly (New Orleans, LA), Peg has been painting and drawing from an early age. She received her BFA in Interior Design from Louisiana Tech University, and an MA in History from the University of New Orleans.  Peg will display in the atrium for an open house meet and greet, where she will show an assortment of her original paintings and photographs. Come see Homestead’s “COOL ART in the ATRIUM.”

Her acrylic paintings and colored pencil drawings depict Louisiana wetlands and urban scenes. Her mixed media collages offer both abstract and familiar local images.  Meet Peg Usner at St. Tammany Homestead on Thursday from 1 pm – 5 pm. 205 N. Columbia Street
