Most wire-framed hanging baskets are sold with a moss lining which is essential for moisture retention. Equal parts peat-based and loam-based compost makes an ideal soil mixture for a hanging basket. Fill the bottom of the basket with 2 inches soil and firm down; cut 2 inch slits along side in accordance with the plants space requirements. Insert trailing plants in slits roots first with plant hanging down. When outside of hanging basket is full plant a dominant plant, such as a cascading fuchsia, in the center. Position a few more plants on top around the center plant, setting at an angle facing outwards. Fill basket firmly with compost to 1/2 inch below the rim and finish with a thin layer of moss over the top. Water basket thoroughly.
