Justitia Omnibus Tammanend: “Justice To All, Tammany”

City of Covington Logo, Enlarged

Delaware Chief Tamanend is historically known as an arbiter of peace and a friend to the first European settlers, and he features prominently in our city logo.  Our parish is named for the diplomatic figure, and although he was not canonized by the church, his popularity among the people brought his “saintly” status to public recognition.

Tamanend is seated on the Parish of St. Tammany, in between Abita Springs and Slidell, with the knee of the right leg resting on Covington.  His seated position indicates a comfortable and inviting demeanor. In his right hand is a staff carrying the banner at top, and resting in Lake Pontchartrain at bottom.  The staff is causing ripples in the water. In his left hand he holds  the scales of justice, which appear to be imbalanced.  Tamanend is positioned directly across from the viewer, giving eye contact, but turned slightly to the right.  While engaging, it implies a sense of trepidation in contemplating future challenges.
