“Painting En Plein Air has been a wonder-filled lesson in truth for me. The color and light are never what you would expect. It is full of variations that are continually exciting to experience and paint.” Mary Monk
Chasing the Light is a collection of luminous landscape paintings that capture the extraordinary effects of the transient moments between day and night. These contemporary paintings record the artist’s impression of the most challenging times of day for plein air artists to capture.
This exhibition celebrates the deeply emotional and moving light that begins and ends our days. These ephemeral moments have fascinated artists for centuries, challenging them to capture accurately the fleeting impressions of transitory light effects. Working en plein air, Monk is well known for her love of light. Seeking to capture those brief moments that define our daily life experience, these sunrises and sunsets that are recorded in the artists hand emphasize the intrinsic value of time. They show us their truth, allowing others to view the significance of the passing of time and its delicate and fugitive beauty.
Mary Monk has been an award winning professional artist for over twenty years. Her work can be found in a myriad of public and private art collections. She is a member of the Degas Pastel Society, the Pastel Society of America and the St. Tammany Pastel Society.
