Meeting for Parish Library’s Millage Request July 9th

booksIn October of 2007, St. Tammany voters renewed the St. Tammany Parish Library’s millage rate of 6.33 mils. The term of this millage began in 2010 and will end in 2024. Since 2010, the library has received only a portion of the amount given by the vote. The library’s millage was rolled back so as not to unduly benefit from the rise in assessments (the full voter approved amount was never received). The library currently receives 5.35 mils with a possible maximum millage of 6.29 mils. This is an operational millage; the library has no capital funds.

Rolling the millage forward to 6.29 mils would cost the average St. Tammany homeowner with homestead exemption an additional $8.93 per year. This is the last year that the library can request a roll up of its millage before the current rate of 5.35 mils becomes the new maximum amount that the library could collect. The .94 mils the library would gain by rolling up would be solely dedicated to capital projects and be used to restore, preserve and update the library’s branches.

A Public Hearing will be held at the Parish Council Chambers on Koop Drive on July 9th 2015 at 6 pm to fully discuss the Library’s request. Learn more at www.sttammany.lib.la.us
