An area collector, who collected Olympia doubloons from ’66 forward, was not able to obtain a 2017 Olympia doubloon. If anyone has a 2017 Olympia doubloon, described as a turquoise, 10-guage doubloon, and are willing to speak with this individual about completing his collection, please contact us at Covington Weekly by email at covweekly@gmail.com.
Historically, the doubloon was from the Spanish doblon, or double, and consisted of a coin weighing 6.766 grams of 22 carat gold. Doubloons were minted in Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Nueva Granada.
The throws which became so popular at Mardi Gras are a similar size to the Spanish doblon, hence the Mardi Gras Doubloon! Check out gonola.com for more interesting Mardi Gras History and other information.
