A feasibility study recently commissioned to develop and evaluate conceptual alternatives for traffic safety and efficient traffic movement at a major intersection in Covington is now underway. Acting upon a request from Mayor Mike Cooper, the Regional Planning Commission (RPC) funded the $35,000.00 study and selected the firm of Buchart Horn Inc., from among several applicants which submitted qualification statements. Per the scope of the study, the engineering consultant will examine two alternatives to improve the intersection where US Hwy 190 (Collins Blvd.) meets LA Hwy 25 and Ronald Reagan Hwy. The first option involves the installation of additional turning lanes and improved traffic signalization. The second option is to develop a workable “roundabout” concept and then compare both alternatives regarding overall traffic efficiency, safety, and costs. Cooper, who is a member of the Transportation Policy Committee of the RPC, stated, “This busy intersection is the hub of the Covington Quad, an area which has experienced higher traffic volumes and new commercial development, and includes Covington Commons — a planned mixed use development, Privette Business Park, Main Street Shopping Center, Oak Alley Estates, the Savannah’s, and hundreds of undeveloped acres. It is important to plan for improvements at this crossroads to accommodate expected growth and to improve safety.” Upon completion of the study, which may take up to six months, Cooper said he will seek funding from State and Federal sources to make the recommended improvements.
