The Perseids are a meteor shower associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle. The radiant lies in the constellation Perseus, and is observed in the north east sky, peaking around mid August. The best times to catch a sighting of a shooting star is between 11 pm and dawn, but they can be spotted as soon as the sun sets.
