Hope you’re staying dry today, friends! Tomorrow promises to be much better and a trip to the market is the medicine of the day. Unfortunately, Eddie will not be there for the next month or so because he is busy planting a spring crop for us. Don’t quote me on this, but I believe squash and zucchini will be on the table soon. Remember to get your eggs from Kristen and honey from Jerry. Last week he had creamed honey, both plain and cinnamon and perfectly spreadable on your biscuits or toast or pancakes, etc. Joy is bringing back her Salmon Plate from last week and boy, did that look delicious! She’ll also have bread pudding and crunchy boudin balls. Abeer is preparing Ouzi this week but you may want to also grab some green bean Moussaka or Mujadara for later in the week.

Kandy is whipping up some of her amazing cream cheese and shrimp rolls — oh, man, those are so good. Her delightful, refreshing salads are always on the menu. Aside from the lovely mushroom or beet & bean burgers Johnny fixes, he also has Chickpea Salad and a Ginger Quinoa Salad to tickle your taste buds. Jerome’s crepes are super! Delicious! And you have a choice of fillings. Treat yourself to a warm sarsaparilla tonic from Mignon. She also serves it cold. See—I told you a trip to the market was good medicine.

You will never guess who is in the gazebo this coming Saturday! Go on, guess. No….no…ok, I’ll tell you — our very own Madeleine from Happy Flour and her sister, Violet! Now, don’t go thinking there won’t be bread ‘cause Patrick is on the job and I hear they are planning a lovely sourdough made with some of Cameron’s black garlic. I just love how our vendors  use each other’s products in their own. Norma Jean has been preparing her vegan wraps with Sam’s Sprouts from quite some time now and Bhakti Farm’s burgers are always topped with them.

Celery has been a main attraction at Northshore Greens. Of course, they also have a wonderful selection of salad greens and herbs. Nick’s store of sweet potatoes doesn’t seem to be dwindling and the carrots he has don’t last in our house. I barely have time to cook them but when I do, the easiest way is to sauté them in Mauthe’s butter with some chopped onions. Soooo good! I see that Vincent (Ken) has some turnips and greens on the table and you may as well take advantage of the citrus. Don’t know how much longer it will be available.

I know you’re all excited to get your gardens started in the weeks ahead as the temperatures start to get milder. Check out Alton’s tables for some herbs to get you started. Before long, he will have veggies galore from which to choose. Make your next stop at Double K; Kristen always has that garden gold manure available. Veggies and herbs love the stuff! Usually that just-getting-back-into-gardening is followed by oh-my-goodness-what-was-I-thinking muscle aches. No worries. Serenity Lane has you covered with Grandpa’s Liniment (this stuff really works!)

Althee has lots of delicious fruits—all in jars—and just as tasty as you can want. You’ll also find yummy pies and quick breads on her table. Stacey is the queen of pickled veggies but her real gift is in the combinations she creates. Whether you’re looking for eggs or veggies or milk or honey or bread, there’s lots of goodness to find at the Covington Farmers’ Market! See ya there!

Good morning, friends, and happy Tuesday! I’m having computer problems so this will be short. Our usual group will be at the market tomorrow. Jeff will have smoky pulled pork, BBQ chili, corn bread (no croutons), mac & cheese or cole slaw. Nanette is fixing a comfortingly delicious chicken noodle soup for those of you are in need of a little TLC. Elizabeth will be there with those amazing muffalettas. Kandi & Joe’s chicken porridge is sure to warm you through and through. Ease those seasonal coughs and colds with Earl’s raw, local honey or just use it sweeten your coffee or tea.

I am looking forward to a wonderful day at the Saturday market, friends, with Jerry Hess in the gazebo. Pat Lester will park his Foodwagon on Columbia Street and serve samples of his Chili. He will also sell Bratwurst with Peppers and Onions, hot dogs and more!

KingcakeKing cakes are on the menu at Bear Creek Road. Jennifer tells me that she will have both cinnamon and traditional French almond king cakes. Don’t stop there! Robin is adding a king cake pepper jelly to her lineup – complete with baby!

Kombucha Girls have a fabulous new shrub – orange-peach-vanilla bean. It tastes just like a Dreamsicle. Their new bitters flavor, Bogue Falaya is inspired by the woodsy, aromatic cypress trees that grow along our beautiful Bogue Falaya and the evergreen & citrus notes of fall and winter seasons. For a healthy treat, try some of Sam’s Sprouts new coconut chips. He has several flavors including mild BBQ, spicy BBQ, sweet mild and jalapeño.

Hi, friends and happy Tuesday! Are you ready for Market Day? I am. I’m looking forward to all the delicious meals and usually pick up a few for later in the week. This week, Nanette will be serving a lemony cilantro lentil soup that just begs to be tasted. I suspect it will be a bit chilly tomorrow and a hot, toasty muffaletta will hit the spot.  Spice your lunch up a bit with one of Rebecca’s hot tamales and a touch of avocado salsa. Kandi is serving that delicious chicken porridge once more – a wonderful treat on a nippy day. Frankie always has scrumptious desserts to delight you and Natalie has STRAWBERRIES! I know. They’re not only an earlier variety but sweet as well.

We’ll be sharing our Saturday with the Three Rivers Festival this weekend and we have a triple treat for you! Steve and Elizabeth Nuccio will be in the demo tent sampling and selling their famous muffalettas. Then, on Theard Street, right across from the market, you will find the Lola Deux Food Truck and those fabulous Parmesan Fries! And, wafting from the gazebo will be the lively tunes of the Last Chance Bluegrass Band. WOWEE!

Time just keeps moving on (faster and faster) and Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. See Enten Farms about a nice plump duck for your Thanksgiving holiday meal or Bruce Lambert (Two Kids Farm) for pasture raised turkeys and geese. If you don’t want to do the cooking, see Jeff (Chomper’s BBQ) and make sure you get your smoked turkey and side dishes on order.

Last Chance Bluegrass BandThere are lots of veggies for the perfect side dish, such as green beans (the casserole is the inimitable Thanksgiving dish), sweet potatoes (you’ll have to candy them yourself), merliton or eggplant plus some shrimp (for stuffing, of course), broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and green onions. For your salad, there are lettuces, arugula, mizuna, mixed greens, shoots, and sprouts. Top them with fabulous dressings from Gina (Bechac) or Nanette. If your family is like ours, dirty rice is a must so don’t forget the ground meat. I’m sure James will have chicken livers for those of you who add them.

Don’t stop there! Mauthe’s New Orleans style cheesecake is the to-die-for-perfect dessert. The only problem is getting it to last until Thanksgiving Day (hmmm…better get two). A taste of one of Jennifer’s pies will convince you that your day will not be complete without a Bear Creek Road pie. Talk to her about what flavors are available.

Soups are a delicious addition to the meal and Norma Jean, Nanette, and Pam (Hot Tamale Mama) have some of the absolute tastiest around! What would your meal be without bread to go with it? Toasted bread, spread with butter or rosemary Skordalia (Vincent and Mauricio) is a great accompaniment to the meal (and even better when it’s already baked.) If you can save a slice or two, warm in the oven and then spread with Althee’s muscadine jelly or plum jam and breakfast is done! Don’t take a chance, order early!

We offer several varieties of mushrooms and choosing which kind can be confusing. Here’s a little hint. Shiitakes have a savory, meaty flavor. Oyster mushrooms have a more subtle nutty taste while the Lion’s Mane is more reminiscent of seafood, especially when cooked. Any of these delicacies will go nicely, gently sautéed in butter or olive oil and tossed into steamed broccoli for an amazing side dish that will have your guests coming back for seconds. Kick the flavor up a notch – 1) simmer in one of Nanette’s lovely sauces, 2) add cream and a tablespoon of my Shrimp on the Barbie seasoning to your sauté and cook until thickened, 3) make a sauce with Robin’s Pepper Jelly by mixing with a little warm water to thin out the jelly and adding to your sauté. Come to think of it, a little pepper jelly sauce would go beautifully with carrots, green beans, cauliflower, cabbage, or sweet potatoes.

What a lovely Tuesday, friends! The sun is smiling with light breezes blowing and it will probably rain later. How typical of southern Louisiana! It won’t be raining tomorrow and if you listen carefully, that’s not thunder you hear, it’s the sound of toe-tapping music on the breezes reminding you that tomorrow is Market Day.

Just in case you were thinking of eating somewhere else tomorrow, take a look at these pies. Frankie says she is bakin’ up a mess of ‘em. One of them probably has your name on it.

Last Wednesday, while I was grabbing a pint of Nanette’s soup (she made a delicious yellow squash & corn chowder) and a lovely lemongrass chicken & noodle salad from Kandi, and some meatballs for later in the week from Cynthia, I had a brainstorm!  know, but it happens at the strangest times. So I picked up half a pound of pulled pork from Jeff.

My idea, since I had already purchased a bag of yellow corn grits from Lena, was to make grits and grillades for Mr. Wonderful. First I sliced and sautéed half an onion. I put the onions to the side and made a roux. When that had browned perfectly, I added a cup of chicken broth (James’ chickens produce an amazing amount of broth when roasted) and the sautéed onion and the pulled pork (which I chopped to smaller pieces) and simmered everything for about 20 minutes. In the meantime, I fixed two helpings of Lena’s grits and served them with my “grillades”. He actually said that it was pretty good…it brought a tear to my eye. I had a little left over for breakfast the next morning. I emptied it into a small baking dish, cracked two eggs on top, sprinkled with a little salt, pepper, and chopped green onion and baked until the yolks were just like I like them. YUM!

It will be another lovely Saturday at the market (I refuse to have anything else). Chris Talley will get us started with classical guitar music drifting from the gazebo. Chubba’s Snowballs will park his truck on Theard Street, along the side of the Courthouse for a summer treat. It’s August and you know you’ll be thankful for that cooling treat.

I think Nourish Two had an amazing day on Saturday. Their sauces, dressings and soups were a big hit. I plan to use their curry sauce on my roasted chicken tonight. Don’t be jealous; put it on your list. My list is usually quite full and since, Mr. W & I were going to a dance last Saturday night, I stopped by Norma Jean’s to get a carton of walnut pâté. I noticed that she has added lemony lentil salad and carrot salad surprise to her table. Both were delicious.

Pam (Lolly Marie’s) has her creamy white chocolate rum ginger truffles once again. Farmhouse Dairy is making cajeta (in addition to creamy goat cheeses). Tiffany explained that cajeta is a caramel-like sauce but more milky than caramel, kind of a Mexican version of Dulce de Leche. She makes hers with goat milk and I know there were flavors, such as chocolate. Oh, my…heaven in a jar! And you can have all this goodness for yourself but….you have to be here to enjoy it!
