Hi, friends and happy Tuesday! What a lovely day it is today and it looks like we will be blessed with sunshine tomorrow, which is great since we will be equally blessed with great food and great music.  Stop by and enjoy a delicious pulled pork sammy with green beans and cole slaw. Or perhaps you’d prefer a crisp salad of lemongrass chicken, crunchy vegetables, and noodles. Bring home one of Nanette’s chicken salad wraps (by lunchtime tomorrow you’ll be glad you did.) Frankie has old fashioned banana pudding this week and will have her decadent Chocolate Lasagna on Saturday. Mr. Houston has lots of great veggies and fresh yard eggs. Natalie will have fresh strawberries. No need to add anything else; just snip off the tops and enjoy!

Oh what a day this Saturday will be! Keith and Nealy Frentz and the Lola Deux Food Truck will be parked on Columbia Street and before you know it there will be a long line for those amazing fries. Chris Talley will serenade us from the gazebo so grab your coffee and enjoy the morning with us.

Seek out the lovely ladies from the Master Gardeners’ Club who will be with us every 3rd weekend of the month to answer your gardening questions. These “vege-cators” have lots of great information for the novice and seasoned gardener alike. Then make a beeline over to Alton and Sandra’s tables to get those starter plants.

Norma Jean has a delicious assortment of quiches each Saturday which usually includes the ever-popular Artichoke & Valbreso Cheese quiche. See what’s on “tap” at Earth Milk. With choices like Oat, Almond, Coconut, Hemp Seed, and Cinnamon Oat, Kristen offers a delicious alternative to dairy. Then, turn around and check out the selection of gourmet dog food from Tiger Bait.

Since you’re over that way, you should check out the new Three Cheese and Spinach Polenta Tart from Bear Creek Road. Farmhouse Dairy may have some fresh goat cheeses which when delicately draped in Robin’s Blackberry Cabernet pepper jelly make a delightful snack. A slice of Mauthe’s cheddar and a dollop of Robin’s Apple Bacon pepper jelly seated regally atop one of Lena’s toasted bread rounds is a treat not to be missed.

Hi, friends and happy Tuesday! What a gorgeous day Wednesday will bring. So don’t waste it inside. Come and spend your lunchtime with us. Nanette is fixing fall vegetable soup this week and with the cooler temperatures moving in, you’ll want extra. I’m looking forward to that and Kandi’s chicken and shredded cabbage salad. I’ll also pickup some pulled pork. I have an idea to make a pot pie with chopped pork, roasted diced sweet potatoes, and onions. Keep your fingers crossed. I may even put some broccoli in there. After that, it’s time for dessert. Tea cakes make a wonderful cookie for your 10:00 break (or Elevenses, second breakfast, lunch…) Frankie is baking up some her special peach cobbler just because it’s Wednesday.

Cooler temperatures will usher in our Saturday and the Three Rivers Festival. Chompers BBQ will do the honors in the cooking tent with the Last Change Bluegrass Band in the gazebo.

Lots of veggies at the market these days – cabbage, turnips, beets, bell peppers, hot peppers, kale, lettuce, tat soi, bok choi, carrots, green onions, sweet potatoes, eggplant… after all, we are a Farmers’ Market. But there are a few other things. You’ll find smoked sausage and bacon at the Jubilee Farms table in addition to their green onion, Italian, Cajun, and hot sausage – all made without additives! We have all the fixins’ for merliton stuffing – fresh merliton, green onion, bread (to make bread crumbs), broth, shrimp and seasoning. I’ll bet Jubilee’s green onion sausage would be a nice change to a holiday classic.

Simply Pure Juice has a new juice – Black and Gold lemonade with activated charcoal and also two wellness shots (smaller versions of their larger juices). W1 has green apple, lemon, ginger, turmeric, cayenne – perfect as we enter into the cold and flu season! With that in mind, you should visit Sacred Earth for their Autumn Immune granola bar. The Autumn Immune bar is filled with raw, organic ingredients such as oats, coconut oil, sunflower seed butter, dates, flax seed, reishi and much more. Then arm yourself with Samantha’s elderberry syrup or elderberry glycerin tincture, a natural immune booster and you are ready for the season.

I can never report on everything we have to offer at the market. You’ll have to come and see for yourself. We’ll be here as always, with smiles on and a bountiful harvest. We’d love to see you.

Wed Farmers Market signHappy Tuesday, friends! I’m looking forward to a lovely day at the market tomorrow. Come by for a delicious lunch, fresh veggies, sweets and treats. Kandi and Joe’s pan seared salmon salad and jasmine tea will make you smile. Frankie is preparing homemade pound cake with fresh fruit topping. Slide through lunch with Jeff’s pulled pork or chicken salad sliders. And, there’s always a scandalously good Mediterranean salad with pita bread from Nanette to tempt you. Earl’s back with raw honey too!

Start off Saturday early with a cup of coffee! We’ll have Zac Maris in the gazebo, so make yourselves at home and stay a while. Nealy and Keith Frentz will drive their food truck, Lola Deux, to the Market and you know what that means! Parmesan fries! OK…deep breaths…you still have 4 more days.

There was the loveliest scent of basil wafting from Norma’s tent last week and, sure enough, she has fresh basil – so great on pizzas or salads. A spread of skordalia (Vincent & Mauricio) on a slice of fresh market bread (Lena, Susie, Crystal) would be right tasty with a chiffonade of fresh basil on top.

Hot peppers have been sneaking onto Nick’s table and will be multiplying over the next few weeks. Right now he has goat’s horn, lemon drop, white habanero, and yellow cayenne. He also has brightly colored sweet peppers – purple, yellow, orange, red, and even green. Check out Spicy Lady’s smorgasbord of flavor and you’re sure to find something that will brighten up whatever you’re cooking – whether it be vegetables or meats.

The Bardwells have quite the spread of vegetables – green beans, red potatoes, okra, eggplant – but you have to get there early; they’ve been selling out before 9:30.  The same at Mr. Houston’s table – butternut squash, yellow squash and zucchini, eggplant, and cucumbers go pretty fast as this time of year. Eddie has also been selling out pretty early even with a large offering of banana peppers, okra, eggplant, and some figs…hmmm. I’m going to have to find a few recipes.

Blood River Honey Kevin tells me he will have buckwheat honey this week and Coast Roast Kevin will be back after welcoming his new arrival with freshly roasted coffee. Unfortunately, I will not be at the market this Saturday so I will miss out on all the wonderful things to be had. But you can enjoy your Saturday filled with wonderful music and great friends and the best ever foods.

Wed Farmers Market signHi, friends and Happy Tuesday!  Are you ready for a great lunch? Well, tomorrow’s almost here bringing all kinds of goodness from your market vendors. I usually go with a plan…what do I want for the rest of the week? Wednesday’s lunch – maybe a Mediterranean salad with pita bread and hummus. Since Frankie is serving fresh fruit kabobs with sour cream & brown sugar dipping sauce, I’ll get that for breakfast on Thursday with a delightful pan seared salmon salad from Kandi for lunch. Friday morning will see pork with hash browns (I’ll have to do those myself) on the breakfast menu (I’m very non-traditional) and a Creole tomato sandwich for lunch – YUM! I believe that Natalie will be back with fresh veggies so I may add a few slices of crunchy cucumber “chips” on the side.

Saturday morning will awaken with the lively music of Cat Lane and the Reaper Cheaters flowing from the gazebo. So grab your coffee and spend a relaxing morning with us. Wildcrafter Smoothie and Juice Bar in Covington will be in the demo tent sampling and selling their delicious and healthy drinks. Can’t wait to try those!

You’ll need a healthy beverage with that, so try Sam’s ultra-fresh coconut water, Amanda’s new green juice, Simply Pure’s Tiger Stripes, or Susan’s Peach Kombucha. Good news! Kombucha Girls has their Master Tonic available again! Can’t beat fresh juices on a warm spring day! Cool off with a refreshing fruit popsicle from Amanda or a hand-shaved snowball from Stephanie.

Liz told me this past weekend that Jubilee Farms will have organic, non-GMO corn available this week and next. So take advantage and get lots of ears while you can. Newly-picked corn grilled in the husk sharing your plate with sliced zucchini and green onion sausage right off the pit – uh-huh, I know you’re smilin’ too. Your veggies are great roasted as well – tomatoes, onions, peppers, squash, and eggplant tossed with olive oil and a salt-free seasoning (Spicy Lady, me) and popped into the oven until they reach perfect deliciousness. Serve with a smile.

BlueberriesI haven’t even mentioned a fourth of the delights you’ll find at the Market like Lolly Marie’s creamy caramels, Bear Creek Road’s soft pretzels stuffed with seasonal fruit, coffee milk from Mauthe’s, blueberries, peaches, or plums. You’ll just have to come out and see for yourself.  Just remember to stop by and say, “hello”. Personally, I can’t wait to find out what’s new this week!

Wed Farmers Market signHi, friends and Happy Tuesday! What a contrast to last night’s storm and we get to enjoy this beauty all week long! So, where will you be tomorrow? Surely not stuck in some dreary office…not with gorgeous blue skies and sunshine smiling down? Surely not with Nanette’s sweet potato, white bean and kale soup awaiting you? Or Kandi’s tempting shrimp & cream cheese rolls OR Jeff’s pulled pork & potato salad OR Nuccio’s hot-from-the-oven muffaletta. Can you really forego a bag of Frankie’s nut brittle? What will you do on Thursday without an Immunity Booster oatmeal bar from Sacred Earth for breakfast? Anticipating a rough day? Get a Stress Release bar as well. Can you get through until Saturday with the fresh veggies you have? Well then, you and Shirley need to get to the Market tomorrow! Oh, what the heck! Bring her along on Saturday too.

The music has been truly wonderful at the Market over the past few weeks and this Saturday will be no different with Joe Manuel in the gazebo! So grab a delicious cup of coffee and mosey on over to the Lola Deux Food Truck to see what incredible morsel they’ve prepared for us this week. You may as well get some Parmesan White Truffle French Fries while you’re there; if not, you know you’ll be back later.

As I sit here at the computer, composing and typing, I am enjoying the remnants of a stew I made last Friday. Now, I use the phrase “I made” quite loosely because in reality I just threw the ingredients together. First I put the green onion sausage (Jubilee Farms) in the oven to bake while I chopped my kale. Into the crock pot it went along with about a cup of water and I just let it simmer for a few hours. Then, I cut the cooked sausage into bite-sized pieces and into the crockpot they went, joined by a container of Nur’s white bean salad. I let it simmer for another hour (I think. I sorta lost track of the time since I didn’t have to do anything) and then sat down to a nice bowl of stew. Yes, it was just me; Mr. Wonderful is not into greens. And now the flavors have been melding for a few days and I warmed it up to enjoy for lunch. Before eating I added a few spoons of Nur’s chipotle hummus and OMGwhiz! The flavors are amazing. I may have to add hummus to a few more of my dishes.

Speaking of flavors, I noticed that Robin has a new taste in pepper jellies – Lemon Basil – perfect over fried fish or as a vinaigrette. Yes, jelly does make a wonderful vinaigrette – a couple of tbsp of jelly, 2 tbsp of vinegar, 2 tbsp of light olive oil (Nuccio’s Lemon is sure to go nicely) and a dash of Dijon mustard, whip it together and Voila! You’re in luck; the veggies are beginning to line up on the produce tables ready to take their turn in your salad – arugula, tat soi, sprouts, tomatoes, green onions. You can also include fresh zucchini and squash in your salad or just sauté them and serve with a drizzle of Nanette’s Lemon Feta dressing or Gina’s Bleu Cheese dressing. The sharp flavors contrast nicely with the mild taste of the squash.

Ishmael is back with pasture raised pork. You’ll find him at the back of the market next to Farmhouse Dairy where you can pick up beef, lamb, or goat meats (and tangy goat cheeses) and just a few paces away from Enten Farms and duck meat! You can find all kinds of meats here. James and John both have chicken. Paul at Jubilee Farms also has pork and beef. Mr. Two is over by the gazebo with shrimp. Isn’t our market wonderful?

We’re seeing lots of pumpkins at the market just in time for a Halloween decorating. Mr. Houston, Greg and Suzie all have them. Oh…wait…Suzie has pumpkin Ooey Gooeys and you can decorate them with faces if you want. She will also have carrot cake muffins this week. I think that means you’ll need milk, ‘cause how you can have such treats without milk? And we have all kinds of milk – cow’s milk from Mauthe’s, goat’s milk from Farmhouse Dairy, and now freshly made almond milk from Sam’s Sprouts. WOW! How can you and Shirley resist? We’ll see you there.

Wed Farmers Market signHi, friends and Happy Tuesday! I don’t think our weather will be quite as chilly as it was last Saturday but we will get to enjoy a smiling sun and cool, laughing breezes that will bring a song to your heart. In addition we’ll have great music and great food! Frankie’s baking up a few red velvet cakes in sizes that are perfect for a snack without regrets. Sip a cup of jasmine tea or blueberry lemonade while you peruse the lunch selection. Remember to take something home for supper or Thursday’s lunch.

Sometimes it feels like the week is just creeping along, but it’s only in anticipation of the coming Saturday. Picture this! The gazebo will be filled with sound as The Lucky Dogs flood the market with music. And that’s the only flooding that will happen unless it’s the smiles and laughter raining within our boundaries. So grab a steamy cup of java and get ready for the Paleo Tiger Tailgate! Chef Robert Vasquez, Lindsey Jo Vasquez and Monica Bravo will bring their LSU Concession Stand, Bravo for Vive, to the Market. You’ll get a chance to taste and buy Pulled Pork Lettuce Wrap, Kale Salad, Opal Basil Water and Paleo Tiger Trail Mix. With LSU T-shirt or without, it’s sure to be a tasty adventure!

Oh boy! The fall crops are beginning to show up in delicious, colorful droves. On Nick’s table you’ll find hot peppers, heirloom sweet peppers, arugula, persimmons, Evangeline sweet potatoes and radishes. Bardwell’s still has tomatoes and red potatoes available in addition to persimmons (Japanese and Fuji), Asian pears, eggplant, and rattlesnake beans. John’s table was filled with mustard greens, radishes, edamame beans, mizuna, Tatsoi, and lots of beautiful fall flowers. Mr. Houston has mustard greens, flat leaf kale, eggplant, zucchini, and yellow squash. Natalie has a table full of large purple eggplant, round zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers and long zucchini. Greg Miller is back with a truck load of pumpkins and an unexpected treat – dried chanterelle mushrooms!

I received a tip last week about an amazing pie from Bear Creek Road. It seems Jennifer has made a black bottom chicory pie and Ann’s description was too delicious. So, I weighed the pros and cons and the pros won out (big surprise, huh?) Well, it was everything I was promised – perfect crust filled with luxuriously creamy chicory chocolate filling topped with whipped cream (homemade) and chocolate shavings. I know, I know….I’ll give you a minute.

 

OK, where was I? Oh yeah. While you’re over by the oak tree, you should investigate all the other goodies in the vicinity, such as Sam’s Sprouts (he has roasted peanut butter and almond butter as well). Then check out the large variety of garden plants that Alton and Sandra have to offer. I think I’m going to need another aloe plant and some lemon thyme and perhaps some rosemary. I do love cooking with herbs.  Enjoy a glass (quart, half gallon) of “booch” from The Kombucha Girls with favorites like green apple or ginger. Pick up a dozen eggs from Nick or the Egg Ladies. Check out Nourish Too’s new simmer sauce – a spicy chocolate habanero sauce made with some of Nick’s chocolate habaneros. Lea told me that one of her customer tosses potatoes with Green Goddess dressing, tops with cheese, and bakes. Doesn’t that sound really yummy?

Don’t forget to visit Farmhouse Dairy for a wonderful assortment of goat cheeses, farm raised meats (beef, goat, lamb) and the cajeta which keeps calling my name. Enten Farms is right there as well with duck meat, duck and chicken eggs and their delicious homemade mustards. Robin’s Rockin’ Pepper Jellies can add zing to any dish or snack. You could probably even spice up your ice cream with a sauce of pineapple, lemon, peach, or mayhaw pepper jellies. Just add a little water to a couple spoonfuls of jelly and mix until smooth and unlumpy (is that a word?). Hmmm. Why haven’t I thought about that before?

Go a little further down the path past Bear Creek Road to Tiger Bait and treat your pet to a fabulous meal of raw pet food. Talk to Jessica about the benefits of feeding your pet a raw diet. You’ll want to have plenty of Samantha’s Elderberry Syrup on hand for those nasty winter colds which seem to appear long before winter shows up. Pick up your eggs and fertilizer from the Egg Ladies and then enjoy one of Dong’s incredible Korean pancakes. They have become as popular as Lola Deux’s Parmesan fries. Trudy won’t be here much longer with her collection of Japanese maples and other patio/garden plants so get them while you can.

Whether you’re at the Wednesday Market or Saturday’s, a stroll around the market is sure to uncover something tempting and terrific, such as Norma’s sweet and salty walnuts, Angel’s overstuffed artichokes, or Dee’s pickled asparagus. Come join us and create your own adventure!

Hi, friends, it is Tuesday, right? The days are going by so fast it’s hard to keep track of them. I’m sure you’re all excited; after all it is almost Market Day! Get your tasty buds ready for some incredibly delicious food. What will it be this week? Shall I tempt you with a few photos?

Need I say more?

Saturday will start with a bang! Danielle Spadavecchia will be in the gazebo, so get here early, grab your coffee and do your shopping ‘cause we have a special treat in the demo tent – Mauthe’s Dairy! The lovely ladies from Mauthe’s will delight us with their soon-to-be-famous Creole Cream Cheese Ice Cream made with their own Creole cream cheese.

Speaking of soon-to-be-famous, the Covington Farmers’ Market is mentioned in the New York Daily News by Alex Palmer as one of his stops on a tour of Louisiana. Check this out:

The wealthiest parish in the state, is home to a rich culinary scene, including the Covington Farmer’s Market, which offers great products and local characters. The article goes on to mention 3 wonderful supporters of the Covington Farmers’ Market – chefs Keith & Nealy Frentz (Lola’s), David & Torre Solazzo (Del Porto’s) and La Provence. We all know that it is a unique and wonderful market. It’s just nice to know that we can WOW them as far away as New York.

We’ll have plenty of tomatoes this week, so don’t forget to stock up on your dressings from Lena and Gina. Lena makes a delicious herbed oil dressing that adds amazing flavor to your salads as well as being great for dipping bread. Gina’s Bechac Bleu Cheese needs no description being an old family recipe that has long been a St. Tammany favorite. Her other dressings (Roasted Garlic & Tomato and Honey Mustard) spice up any vegetable or meat.

There are also lots of mushrooms to be had with chanterelles still in season and a steady offering of shiitakes and oysters. Peaches will be around for another week or two but I think the figs are done for this year; we were fortunate to have such an abundant crop. Cooking pears are going to making an appearance for the next few months.

The flowers are fantastic; the flavors abundant. How many more reasons do you need to be at the market each week? My thoughts exactly!

Happy Tuesday to you, friends! Boy, the weeks are absolutely flying by; school will be back in session before you know it. Not that that has anything to do with the Covington Farmers’ Market, ‘cause we are here rain or shine, July or December, and we have lots of good meals and treats for you. New to both the Wednesday and Saturday markets is Samantha and her excellent Elderberry Syrup and Tincture. Elderberry syrup is filled with antioxidants, potassium, beta-carotene, calcium and is a natural remedy for preventing and recovering from colds, flu, sore throats. Stop by and check it out while you’re getting a fine lunch and enjoying the breezes I’ve requested for tomorrow. The rain, by special arrangement, will hold out until late afternoon.

Bright and early Saturday (cause that’s when the veggie selection is best) grab your coffee and get your veggies while the gettin’s good. Mr. Weatherman, who is not known for his reliability, says we will have temps in the 90s but that won’t bother us because Chubba will be in the cooking tent with SNOWBALLS! No word on flavors yet – but does it really matter? Ms. Olga Wilhelmine’s fine voice will emanate from the gazebo somewhere around 9:30 and the day is off to a fantastic start.

You know we have the most gorgeous and tasty veggies around but we are more than just pretty produce. Trudy’s Japanese maples have been known to draw people from as far away as Mississippi and Alabama because you can plant them and they live! Miss Betty’s beauties are sure to brighten up dens as well as patios and Dennis offers many trees and garden plants. I can see Nancy’s sunflowers smiling at me from across the market. Now if it’s herbs you’re lookin’ for, Alton and Sandra are your go-to people. Of course, if you just want the scent of the garden, Aunt Bee’s soaps are a special treat.

We have specialty items like walnut paté, gourmet coffee beans, hummus, bean sprouts, skordalia, raw crackers, pickled veggies, organic oatmeal bars, homemade mustard, overstuffed artichokes, kombucha, water kefir, cultured veggies, and salt free seasonings. And the mushrooms…bold shiitakes, delicate oyster, and wild chanterelles…imagine them gently sautéed in Mauthe’s butter with onions and garlic, then tossed into pasta (Cynthia, 7Grain) – doesn’t that sound amazing? Southy’s superb summertime soups add pizzazz to a plain salad or sandwich unless your sandwich is spread with Meaux Mustard (Enton Farms)! And the cookies…well what can I say except “See ya there!”

Good afternoon, friends, and Happy Tuesday! Vacations are wonderful but it’s great to get back into a routine again. After two weeks, I feel so out of touch but I’m sure there will be great lunches – crispy egg rolls, lovely raw salads and wraps, a few Honduran tamales, delicious pulled pork and perhaps Jeff will even surprise us with smoked chicken salad. Enjoy your lunch with a refreshing cup of jasmine tea, strawberry fruit pinch, or blueberry lemonade. Don’t forget to pick up your fresh veggies. Squashes are perfect to stuff with a little pulled pork or chicken salad and bake. Or fill with Nanette’s corn and black bean salad for a vegetarian flair that will even satisfy meat lovers. Enjoy raw or baked. Make your own “spaghetti” with zucchini. I usually cut the zuke lengthwise into ¼” thick (or so) slices, then cut each of those slices into ¼” long pieces. You can stir fry it before adding sauce or use it raw.

Saturday, lovely Saturday, will be another great market day with fresh watermelon slices from Jubilee Farms in the cooking tent. I know one slice won’t be enough but don’t fret, they will have some for sale as well. We will also be treated to the vibrant tunes of Linnzi Zaorski. Her sassy 1940s style brightens up our morning. So grab your coffee, put your dancin’ shoes on and have a great time with us.

I’m looking forward to seeing if there are any new veggies to be had. I am certain there will be eggplant. Bread and fry eggplant rounds and top them with some of my O-luv Artichoke sauce, Cynthia’s Bolognese sauce, or with Bechac’s Bleu Cheese dressing. Yum!

I know there will be fresh beans, okra, squashes, heirloom and Creole tomatoes, blueberries and peaches, tomatillos, and peppers. I was kinda strapped for a great recipe when I came across Marietta’s recipe for spaghetti squash from Slice of Heaven Farm. Thanks, Marietta, this sounds wonderful!

Cut spaghetti squash in half lengthwise. Scrape out seeds. Place open side down in a baking sheet with a half inch of water in it. Bake for 40 mins at 350°F.  Once the squash is done, take it out and scrape out the inside “noodles” with a fork and spoon.  Prepare a pan on medium high heat and melt a tablespoon of butter with a tablespoon of minced garlic. Add the “noodles” and toss in the butter and garlic. Add a splash of dry white wine. (If you’re not big on wine, I’m sure that vegetable or chicken broth will work.) Sauté until the wine is evaporated, about 4-5 minutes. Finish with minced parsley and grated parmesan. Serve hot. Doesn’t that sound delicious?

Another good idea I came across has to do with okra. Lots of our vendors will have okra this week and I know many of you stay away from it because it tends to be slimy. Slice your okra, place in a single layer on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven at 350°F for 10 minutes on each side. It can then be put in recipes for gumbo, or whatever you like. Best yet – NO SLIME!!

I can’t wait to get back to the Market, to the brightly colored flowers and green plants, cool summer soups, freshly baked breads, a cookie selection to delight the most discriminating tastebud, sweet honey, jars of beautifully fermented veggies, your friendly faces, laughing children, the scent of herbal soap wafting on the breeze along with Tabasco’s endearing cock-a-doodle-doo. It’s so good to be home!
