Keep Covington Beautiful (KCB) is pleased to announce that it has been selected as a recipient of a 2016-2017 Healthy Communities Grant from Keep Louisiana Beautiful, the State’s premier anti-litter and community improvement organization.
The grant ($9,380) will support KCB’s overall project goals to raise awareness of the importance of the city’s network of waterways, to promote stewardship of the natural environment and to expand the educational potential of the Blue Swamp Creek Nature Trail.
KCB will partner with the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation to sponsor its Water Watch Program, designed to teach students about water quality and watershed management, at one of the local schools. Clean-ups of portions of Blue Swamp Creek and Mile Branch will be held and the potential negative effects of trash found in the creeks will be studied.
The Blue Swamp Creek Nature Trail, an existing community amenity created and maintained by KCB at the Covington Recreational Complex, serves as KCB’s primary, on-going environmental education project. A team will be formed to research and design several graphic educational signs, which will be installed along the trail, explaining the ecological benefits of the various native plant habitats visitors are passing through and the management practices used to maintain them.
“We are extremely grateful for these funds which enable us to work directly with some of the youth of our community and to provide more information to our citizens about our local natural environment”, said Priscilla Floca, KCB Executive Director.
Keep Covington Beautiful is a volunteer-based, non-profit 501(c) 3 corporation working to form partnerships between citizens, businesses and government for beautification, environmental education, recycling and litter prevention in Covington. KCB encourages the participation of all citizens in its projects.
