Covington Wins Tree City USA Award

Covington Wins Tree City USA Award

The City of Covington has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. 2017 was the twenty fourth year that Covington has received this national recognition, based upon recommendations by state foresters, who co-sponsor the program along with the USDA Forest Service.
Keep Covington Beautiful partners with the city to hold an annual Arbor Day observance which is one of the requirements of the Tree City program. The KCB Arbor Day Seedling Tree Giveaway is held on Louisiana Arbor Day each January. In 2017 four hundred seedlings were given away; in 2018 seven hundred found new homes.

The city also received a Tree City Growth Award for the fifth time. The city qualified for this designation for two new programs initiated in 2017. The city earmarked funds especially for the care and maintenance of Live Oaks on public property. The Covington Tree Board established the Landmark Tree Program. This program is open to all tree species on private or public land that meet certain criteria for age, size, or association with an historic event, person or community landmark. Find more information about the program at covla.com.
KCB is setting up a Live Oak Preservation Project and is working with the city to make recommendations for the care and maintenance of its Live Oaks.
The project will begin as part of a celebration of National Arbor Day in April. Keep Covington Beautiful is a 501C3 non-profit organization. To learn more about how you can make a commitment to our community, visit keepcovingtonbeautiful.org or send an email to: [email protected]
