Flower of August: Gladiolus

600px-Gladiolus_imbricatus1002The name Gladiolus is derived from the Latin ‘gladius’ (a sword), and is sometimes referred to as the “Sword Lily”.  Gladioli are perennial bulbous flowering plants in the Iris family.  The flowers range in color from pink to reddish or light purple with contrasting markings (white to cream or orange to red).
