9The St. Tammany Art Association announces the artists selected for the 49th National Juried Artists Exhibition, the Summer Show, which opens July 12, 2014 with a reception from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Artists’ awards will be presented at 7:00 p.m., which will include the coveted Best of Show Award with a prize awarded in the amount of $1,000. The exhibition continues through August 9, 2014 when a closing reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with selected artists’ commentaries about their work at 6:30pm.
This year 32 artists were selected for exhibition, including 17 from Louisiana. Other artists accepted into the show come from across the country, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington.
Artists accepted into the summer show and in competition for prizes are: Michael Aldana, David Armentor, Matthew Arnold, Casey Ausman, Peter Barnitz, Ron Bennett, Julie Bowland, Andrew Boyd, Carolyn Buslener, Daryl Carter, Rene Culler, Robert Dutruch, Cathy Fields, Joelle Ford, McArthur Freeman, Jim Graham, Charles Gudaitis, Michelle Hartney, Jessica Hilvitz, Joseph Holsapple, Sarah Kilpatrick, David Lambert, Tony Lazorko, Sadako Lewis, Martin Needom, Dale Newkirk and Jeff Mickey, Colin Poole, Herb Roe, Melissa Smith, Paul Troyano, Robert Vicknair and Raphael Warshaw.
Open to artists from all over the United States, the St. Tammany Art Association’s annual juried exhibition is one of the most diverse in the state of Louisiana, featuring only visual art completed within the past two years.
The juror for the 2014 Summer Show is Beth Batton, who serves as the Curator of the Collection at the Mississippi Museum of Art where she has served since 2005. Exhibitions she has curated at the Museum include Italian Art from the Permanent Collection (2013-2014) and Oraien Catledge: Photographs of Cabbagetown (2010). From 2001 to 2005, Batton served as Arts-Based Community Development Director at the Mississippi Arts Commission. Prior to that, she was a project coordinator at Mississippi Cultural Crossroads, an award winning community arts organization in Port Gibson, Mississippi. Batton received a B.A. with honors in Fine Arts from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. A photographer, her photographs have been exhibited in galleries in Atlanta, Austin, and Jackson.
