This Week at the Farmers Market by Charlene LeJeune

Hi, friends!  I know your tastebuds are throbbing as you think about what you’ll find at the market this week. Take a deep breath, relax, and plan your visit…swift breezes, lots of sunshine, finger-snappin’ music and lots of great food. Can’t wait, can you?
On Saturday, we’ll all be enjoying Keenan Knight in the gazebo. Lots of melodies and lots of great food – Steve and Elizabeth Nuccio will sample (and sell) their amazing muffalettas at the cooking tent. WOW! I know…just take a deep breath, go get your coffee and a muffin (or two) and stroll around until they get set up.
Did you get a chance to mosey around the market last week? Well, if you got there early enough, you would have been able to partake of a smorgasbord of fresh fruits and veggies – Creole tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, eggplant, plums, peaches, blueberries. Heaven…   I’m in Heaven…   and my heart beats so that I can hardly speak,   and I can find the goodies that I seek,  when I’m at the market shopping week to week.
We don’t allow bugs at the market, but there are some places where you will need a good insect repellent. We do allow sunshine, though, so naturally a good sunscreen is the order of the day. And natural is the key with Jasmine’s organic sunscreen and organic insect repellent. You’ll be glad you treated your skin so well. You’ll want to take a few minutes to talk to her about what you put on your skin. There are so many harmful ingredients in those store-bought brands. She’s on the sidewalk side of the gazebo. While you’re over there, pick up a pound or two of those HUGE shrimp from Mr. Two. Peel, de-vein, and place in a casserole dish with peeled and diced squash or eggplant. Sprinkle generously with my Shrimp on the Barbie salt free seasoning and about a half cup of butter (Mauthe’s) or Garlic Olive Oil (Nuccio’s) and bake at 350 for about 20 minutes. Enjoy with a generous slice of freshly baked bread (7Grain, Windfield Farms, Betty Rue).
Nick’s been busy fermenting string beans and squash and has jars of each for sale. Now, I know that fermenting veggies does not sound particularly appetizing buuuut they taste heavenly. And when you add the health benefits… It’s amazing the number of truly health giving items available each week – Kombucha, all-natural skin care, non-toxic cleaning products, cultured (fermented) veggies and all the fresh fruits and veggies you could want! We’ve just about got it all – fresh veggies, mushrooms (shiitake and chanterelle), peaches, plums, blueberries, yard eggs…it is a farmer’s market after all.
You’ll also find prepared foods such as, stuffed artichokes, New Orleans cheese grits, shell macaroni stuffed with cheese, tamales, empanadas, plantains, pickled things (garlic, merliton, beets and more), pasta sauce, pasta, salsa, cool summer soups, red lentil balls, hummus, pesto, goat cheese spreads, olive salad, blended olive oils,…are you dizzy yet?… white bean salad,  jellies, jams, fresh flowers, milk, salad dressings, cheese, yogurt, honey, herbs, wonderfully aromatic soaps, …deeeep breath… free range chicken, grass fed beef, fresh roasted international coffees, ornamental plants, garden plants, trees, gigantic shrimp, cream cheese ice cream, seasonings, fresh squeezed juices, the most wonderful Popsicles and, naturally, lots of remarkable vendors! What are you waiting for? Oh, that’s right… tomorrow.
Lots of love
